Working from home comes with a range of luxuries like comfy clothing, flexible work hours, zero work commute. But working from a home office can also present a range of challenges including lack of self-motivation, isolation, the calling of your dirty washing or the ringing of the doorbell.
So how do you set yourself up to successfully work from home? Here are our top tips to setting yourself up for a productive day in the home office:
Create a working space
Find a space within the house that serves your self-motivation. I find that a work space with natural light really sets me up for a productive day.
Ensure you invest in a good quality working chair & a reliable computer. The last thing you want is a back ache and IT issues.
Try not to set yourself up on the couch in front of the television. Not only does it present a tempting distraction, but your posture will pay!
Set your tasks for the day/week
This is a simple and easy was to help ensure you have a productive week. Writing down the targets you need to meet by the weeks end allows you to get a visual snapshot of the work week ahead. Working from home you will not have a co-workers to remind you of important dates, so
Then micro plan. Each morning before you open those emails, write down a few dot points on the tasks you would like to achieve for the day. Then embrace that feeling of achievement when you get to cross them off. Celebrate each little milestone win!
Know when you work most productively
It's important that you manage your energy and not your time. This means finding the times of the day where you are most productive and really focusing your energy during that period. Do you work best first thing in the morning after a coffee? If yes, then 'eat the frog' and tick off those more challenging tasks first. It will make the remainder of the day's task seem like a breeze.
Do you work best after you have put on that dirty load of washing, done the dishes & a tidy up? If so, then get those tasks done before you sit at your desk, because we all know that voice in your head will have you up and down all day trying to sneak those home jobs in.
Finally, knowing when it's time to clock off!
Whether you are a business owner or your employer offers you the option to work from home, KNOW WHEN TO CLOCK OFF. It is easy to keep burning the candle and doing that extra task, but set yourself an alarm for knock off time. Use that extra time which working from home grants you and spend it with your kiddies, have an afternoon cup of tea, or take that bath you have been wanting to.
Working from home may take a little time to a
This week, we got the chance to take five with the very talented Ameera from Rose Martin Creative. Rose Martine Creative is owned and operated by one creative lady and her fiance, all from their humble abode in Perth WA. They custom make & initial all their unique jewellery pieces by hand.
We asked her six questions about her business and her tips to running a successful business.
What inspired you to start your business?
I think I was seeking a creative outlook, wanting to do something fun that I enjoyed and could run and develop on my own terms. Having a side hustle enables me to be creative, work on my terms, be passionate and enjoy what I’m doing and see what it develops into. RMC didn’t originally start as a Jewellery business, but in a short period of time of creating RMC it very quickly adapted to what it is today. Also encouragement from my sister-in law that this was actually something I could do is was helped get the ball rolling and confidence!
Tell me a little bit about your business?
RMC was created by myself, with a tone of support from my fiancé (it’s definitely a team effort!). I made jewellery when I was younger and jewellery making for some time at art school. After a lot of research, trialling and encouragement I launched RMC as a jewellery business two months ago. We create custom initialled and pressed jewellery pieces as well as fresh water pearl pieces, all from my little business room (I call it the fun room) at home. We use filled metals that are sourced ethically and support another small business that create the metal and is owned and operated by a father + daughter team which I love. Our pieces are mainly pendant necklaces, some bracelets and we have recently released two of our earring pieces with so many designs to cone over the next few months!
